Residential Gutter Warranties — What Is Covered and for How Long
Gutter warranties are simpler than siding warranties but still misunderstood at claim time. Here is how manufacturer and workmanship coverage work for residential gutter systems.
Residential Gutters Projects
Manufacturer Warranty on Aluminum Gutter Coil
Seamless aluminum gutters are formed on-site from coil stock rather than pre-manufactured in a factory, which means the warranty structure is somewhat different from a boxed product warranty. The coil coating manufacturer (not the installer) warrants the coil finish — the baked-on color coating applied to the aluminum coil before it is roll-formed into gutter profile. Quality aluminum coil carries a 20-year warranty on the color coating against peeling, cracking, and significant color change. "Significant" is defined differently by each coil manufacturer, but the threshold is generally a measured color change exceeding the specified Delta E value on an unexposed sample comparison. The aluminum substrate itself — the metal that will not rust — carries a warranty against corrosion perforation for 20–30 years depending on the coil manufacturer. Seam sealants and fasteners are not covered under the coil warranty; they are covered under the installer's workmanship warranty. Copper gutters carry essentially a lifetime warranty on the material because copper does not rust or corrode in any meaningful way in residential applications. The patina process is normal and not a warranty issue. Steel gutters carry a corrosion warranty tied to the galvanizing thickness — typically 15–25 years. If galvanizing is compromised (mechanical scratching, chemical exposure) and rust develops, the warranty is void at that location.
Workmanship Warranty — Seams, Hangers, and Slope
The workmanship warranty from the installer covers the installation quality: seam integrity at corners and downspout outlets, hanger spacing and fastener specification, slope accuracy (typically 1/4 inch of drop per 10 linear feet toward the downspout), downspout connection and sealing, and extension placement. Black Canyon Exteriors warranties our gutter labor for one year on seam integrity and five years on hanger fastening and structural integrity. The distinction matters: a seam that develops a weep within 12 months of installation is a workmanship issue we remedy at no charge. A hanger that pulls out of deteriorated fascia 3 years after installation may or may not be workmanship — we assess whether the fascia condition was disclosed or discoverable at installation time. When hiring a contractor, the workmanship warranty should be in writing on the installation contract. Verbal commitments are unenforceable. The warranty period for seam work in our industry ranges from 1 year (typical) to 3 years on premium contractors. For structural work (hangers and fastening) the range is 1–5 years. Anything under one year for seams should prompt scrutiny.
What Voids a Gutter Warranty
The most common warranty voidance for gutters is mechanical damage by the homeowner or their contractors during maintenance or other exterior work. Using metal tools (scrapers, ice picks, putty knives) to remove debris or ice from inside the gutter permanently deforms the profile and scratches the coil coating, which voids the coating warranty at those areas. Ladder damage — resting an extension ladder directly on the gutter edge rather than using a ladder standoff — dents the front face of the gutter and can pull hangers from the fascia. This is a common voidance cause. Power washing the gutter exterior with a pressure washer at close range can delaminate the coil coating. The correct method is a low-pressure hose and soft cloth. Adding aftermarket gutter guards that require drilling through the front face of the gutter or modifying the gutter lip can void the material warranty at those modification points. Storm damage from hail, wind-blown debris, or falling branches is an insurance claim, not a warranty claim. Document storm events with photos and file through your homeowner's insurance rather than pursuing a manufacturer warranty claim for impact damage.
Filing a Warranty Claim
For workmanship claims, contact Black Canyon Exteriors directly with a description of the issue and photographs. We schedule an inspection within five business days. If the issue falls within our warranty scope and period, we schedule remediation without charge. For manufacturer warranty claims on the coil coating, you need: the contractor's invoice showing coil manufacturer and color code, photographs of the defect next to an unexposed comparison sample (a small piece of coil from behind the downspout is an unexposed comparison), and a brief written description of when the problem appeared. Contact the coil manufacturer's warranty department with this package. Response times for coil coating claims are typically four to eight weeks. Manufacturers may send a representative or request an approved inspector visit before approving the claim. Because our gutters are formed on-site from coil stock, we can provide the coil manufacturer documentation from the installation record.
Common Questions
- Does my gutter warranty transfer to the next homeowner?
- The coil manufacturer warranty is a product warranty and generally does not transfer to new homeowners — it runs with the contractor who purchased the coil. Our workmanship warranty is similarly tied to the original installation contract. When you sell your home, the gutters transfer as part of the property. Disclosure of gutter condition in the seller's disclosure is the practical protection for the buyer.
- My gutters are only two years old and already leaking at a corner — is that a warranty claim?
- A seam that develops a significant leak within our one-year workmanship warranty is a warranty item. A seam that develops a minor weep at two years may be attributable to sealant shrinkage over the thermal cycling of two Utah winters — which can be a workmanship issue or a maintenance item depending on the extent. Contact us with photos. In our experience, a seam leaking enough to stain the fascia within two years is a workmanship issue regardless of where in the cycle it falls. We prioritize good relationships over warranty technicalities on clear cases.
- Are gutter guards covered under the gutter warranty?
- Gutter guards from the same manufacturer as the gutter system may be covered under a unified product warranty. Guards from a separate manufacturer carry their own warranty — typically 20 years on quality micro-mesh products. Installation-specific defects in guard mounting are covered by our workmanship warranty. If a guard section separates, lifts, or allows overflow where it did not before, contact us for assessment.
- Ice bent my gutter last winter — is that covered?
- Ice loading damage is a homeowner's insurance claim for weather-related damage, not a manufacturer or workmanship warranty claim. Document the damage with photographs before any debris thaws and photograph any adjacent roof or attic conditions that contributed to ice dam formation. File with your insurance company and let the adjuster determine coverage under your policy terms.
- The fascia board rotted and took the gutter down with it — who is responsible?
- Fascia rot is a maintenance issue originating from inadequate fascia paint maintenance or from water infiltration above the gutter at the roof edge. We inspect fascia condition before installation. If fascia was sound at installation and deteriorated during the warranty period, that is a maintenance issue. If fascia was deteriorating at installation and we installed over it without noting the condition in writing, that is a workmanship issue. Our installation contracts note fascia condition at the time of installation — this documentation protects both parties.
